When I first started my tenure with IMCA TV, one of the first racing events that I was privileged to work on was the Dakota Classic Modified Tour. This legendary tour brought a slew of experiences that have helped shape my vision of what I see as North Dakota racing and, precisely, what western North Dakota racing is. One aspect of that experience was the announcing duo of Larry McFall and Lindsay Lawson. Their quick wit and booming enthusiasm made that experience memorable. Since that moment, I have always viewed them as a top-of-the-line announcing duo. While Lindsay has moved on from announcing but still stays very involved in the racing scene, Larry has continued as one of the announcers at the Nodak Speedway, Williston Basin Speedway, along with helping other events and tracks. That was until the most recent "The Dirt Weekly" dropped this week, and Larry announced that he was stepping away from being the announcer at those locations.
This was a bit of a sombering announcement, as Larry has been an announcing staple in the racing scene in those areas for twenty-five years. To imagine the Playground of Power without Larry's booming voice is a thought many cannot comprehend. Larry was there when the grandstands were rebuilt into the massive formation that they are now. He has also filled many roles at the track, such as a flagman and track reporter. So, it's safe to say that Larry has seen a thing or two during his time attending and calling the races. While he said he would be more than willing to step in to help if any track needed him, he made it clear that he was torn on his decision to step away. From missing his legendary "Oh My" to Larry pulling in with his Corvette and sunglasses, race night just won't feel the same in western North Dakota. I'm sure these tracks will find suitable replacements to fill the void Larry is leaving behind, but it will undoubtedly take some time to get used to it. To whoever fills Larry's position, you have some mighty big shoes to fill.
Larry, congratulations on a long and dedicated career announcing some of the best racing action that North Dakota has to offer! Thanks for the memories.
Now someone cue the "Detroit Rock City" music as one of the ground pounders of announcing makes his exit.
